Content Matters: On Customer Care, AT&T and the iPhone

I so want an iphone 3gs and my teen wants an iphone 3g; our current phones through TMO are both over 3 years old. I wish we had a definite 'yes' and a date regarding an alternate carrier for the iphone in the US. I don't want to commit to AT&T if it is a nightmare for 2 years (I rarely hear anything positive about AT&T, and my only experience was years ago with their long-distance service; they refused to acknowledge my cancellation and continued to charge me for 8 months, turning it over to collections and reporting on my credit!) So I'm hesitant to go to AT&T. My T-Mobile customer service has been outstanding, and I've been happy with the service overall. TMO rates better than Verizon for customer care, but Verizon's network seems to be the best and they are the one that turned down the iphone initially and are now rumored to be in talks with Apple. I would wait a few months and continue to deal with our outdated phones we now have, happily switching to Verizon if Apple really is going to end the exclusive beauty-and-the-beast partnership with AT&T... but what if it doesn't happen? Wasn't the first exclusive supposed to expire this year but AT&T got it extended to 2010? There may be no end in sight.
